A BRAND new festival has been granted £20,000 of council funds.

The first Sherburn Craft and Food Festival will take place throughout the village over the August Bank Holiday, and Selby District Council announced this week it would provide £20,000 to support the event.

The festival will include more than 70 craft stalls, 20 vintage stalls and 50 food stalls, with vintage cars, motorbikes, a funfair and live entertainment, along with cooking demonstrations from celebrity chefs and a children’s cookery school.

Organiser, Cllr David Buckle, said: “We know there’s a great community spirit here in Sherburn – we’ve seen that with events such as last year’s Cycle Saturday event as part of Tour de Yorkshire – and we want to build on this success.

“This year’s very first craft and food festival promises to be big and we’re already getting lots of enquiries from people who want to be part of it, and from people who want to come and visit.”

The event has been organised by the Sherburn Teasel Community Interest Company, with support from the district council, Welcome to Yorkshire, Sherburn-in-Elmet Parish Council, local community groups and local businesses. Cllr Richard Musgrave, executive member with responsibility for tourism, said: “This has the potential to deliver long-term benefits for Sherburn in terms of raising its profile.”
