BRENNAN Reece makes his Burning Duck Comedy Club bow in York on Tuesday at the Black Swan Inn, Peasholme Green, in his tour show Everglow.

"Hello! I'm the English Comedian of the Year for 2015 and this is my debut show," says Brennan. "In Australia it sold out. I know that sounds like bragging, but I don't know another way to explain that people liked it. I've also appeared on BBC, ITV, E4 and supported Joe Lycett on tour. Still bragging. I just really like doing comedy and if you come and see me, I reckon you'll like it too."

Brennan was a nominee for Best Newcomer at the 2016 Edinburgh Comedy Awards with Everglow, a heart-warming show about growing up in the North, family and masculinity, wherein he specialises in "making up stuff about family members".

He has since taken the show to Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide on his Australian travels and is now touring Everglow in an expanded version. "It's sort of grown since last August's hour-long show; it now lasts an hour and 45 minutes, including the support slot by Chris Washington, who's sharing the driving around the country," says Brennan. "On tour, you spend spend most of your time driving to gigs rather than on stage – I really should be a delivery driver!" he says.

Brennan grew up in Ashton-under-Lyne, a market town in Tameside, Greater Manchester, before moving to Manchester two years ago. "I grew up on a council estate with a very supportive mum and dad, and the show is a love letter to them.

"I have an older brother, who's ten years older than me, and a sister who's seven years older, and I was a mistake...but don't tell anyone! Being the youngest, still to this day I get away with anything, and I reckon I could still get my brother and sister into trouble!"

How did Brennan end up in comedy? "I went to an all-boys secondary school where they always suggested you should be a plumber or an electrician, and most of my friends when I was growing up were into football, but I was a fan of showing off, so any chance I got to perform, I did," he says.

"When I was ten, I joined a youth theatre, though at 15 I steered away from that, but at 21 I was lucky enough to get an acting agent, and did all sorts, like getting to do a tour with The Who when they did their Quadrophenia show. Hearing stories from Pete Townshend, about when he was my age, he said you should always use your strengths, whatever you do.

"So at 25 I started doing stand-up, when I wanted to try out some new things for fun. I thought I'd do it once but it went so well that it's turned into a hobby that's gone horrifically well!"
