ST PATRICK’S day celebrations will take place in York later this month as the York Irish Association hosts its third York Irish St. Patrick’s Weekend Festival.

As in 2015 and 2016, the festival will take place in a marquee in St. Sampson’s Square from 5pm until 10.30pm on Friday, March 17 and from 11am to 10.30pm on Saturday, March 18 with entertainments from dance to music.

The Friday evening will start with an Irish dancing performance by St.Aelred’s School of Irish Dance, and the evening will also see Irish music performances from Gaelstrom and 2 Bob.

The night will then finish with a ceilidh with the New Fox Band. On the Saturday there will be performances from The Flying Donkeys, Paula Ryan, Scrubwood and Roisin Ban and a ceilidh with Fiddlers Wreck.

There will also be a display about the history of the Irish in York. while traditional Irish food and drink will be provided in the marquee by the Three Cranes pub.

Brendan Tannam, chairman of the York Irish Association said: “We are really excited to be hosting our third York Irish St. Patrick’s Festival.

“It should be a great atmosphere especially with the Festival starting on St. Patrick’s day itself.”

The activities are all bring an understanding on Irish culture and traditions to York. The events are free, and there will be children’s facepainting on offer as well as a raffle.
