A BAR in York has been ordered to pay more than £1,500 after complaints about excessive noise.

Macumba Bar in Coffee Yard, off Stonegate, was found guilty of breaching a noise abatement notice at York Magistrates' Court today.

The prosecution was led by City of York Council, after a number of complaints about loud music from the bar between July 16, 2013, and July 2, 2016, and numerous warning letters were sent.

Noise patrol officers visited the bar on June 24 last year, and could hear loud music and feel vibrations from a bass beat played at a level deemed to be a statutory nuisance. An officer on the noise patrol described the music as "some of the loudest I have ever heard in someone’s home". The officer also observed a door and windows left open at the premises which breached the premises licence.

A noise abatement notice was served on licence holder and company director Hayati Kucukkoylu, 50, of Boltby Road, York, on 30 June 2016, which prohibited the playing of music at a level to be a statutory nuisance.

However, a further complaint was received on July 2, and the music was so loud officers could hear many of the songs word for word and considered it a breach of the noise abatement notice.

Cllr Sam Lisle, Executive Member for Housing and Safer Neighbourhoods, said: "We rely on local people to help us gather evidence to complete our investigations and take action and I’m grateful for the cooperation of this local resident to support our work. Excess noise can significantly impact on the lives of local people and we work hard to keep levels acceptable."

To report excessive noise from licensed premises or businesses phone 01904 551525 or email public.protection@york.gov.uk or report domestic noise on 01904 551555 or neo@york.gov.uk The bar was ordered to pay a fine of £390, prosecution costs of £1,105, and a £39 surcharge.
