A NEW fund will offer grants to students in the Selby area.

Selby District Council has teamed up with Selby College and Students’ Union to create the new Youth Wellbeing Fund, which will provide small grants of up to £100 to students between the ages of 16 and 24 to help them overcome challenges to their education and impacting on their mental wellbeing.

Cllr Richard Musgrave said the idea came out of recent discussions in the district.

He said: “The need for this fund was identified through speaking to partners at our mental health conferences last year.

“Mental health provision and support for young people was raised as an issue again and again.” Young students will be invited to become trustees of the fund for a year with money also coming from the public to support the fund.

Allan Stewart principal and chief executive of Selby College, said: “We are aiming to raise £1,000 to kick start this project.”
