THE Archbishop of York Dr John Sentamu visited chef Andrew Pern in the kitchen of the Star Inn at Harome where the pair cooked a pheasant dish together.

The afternoon’s cookery was part of the Archbishop’s mission taking place in the deanery of Northern Ryedale throughout last weekend.

The mission was the first in a series which will see the Archbishop go “on the road” to join all 21 deaneries in the Diocese of York throughout 2017 and 2018 for weekends of celebration, witness and blessing, telling others of the love of God.

His tour began with visits to four schools on Friday, including Ryedale, Welburn Hall, Lady Lumley’s and Thornton Dale.

At Welburn Hall, the Archbishop attended an assembly put on by the pupils, which included performances and songs.

Richard Bramley, head teacher at Lady Lumley’s, said: “The students asked some interesting questions, including one querying the Archbishop’s opinions of Donald Trump, a question which drew a very forthright answer.

“It was a lovely occasion and a privilege to play host to such a charming person.”

The mission then spent Saturday visiting Wykeham, Thornton-le-Dale, Pickering, Middleton, Lastingham and Kirkbymoorside, with evensong in Beadlam.

The Star Inn is a Michelin-starred inn at Harome, just outside Helmsley. It’s building is believed to date back to the 14th century.

Archbishop Sentamu said: “I am looking forward to joining each of our 21 deaneries over the next 18 months, from Middlesbrough, Guisborough and Stokesley to Howden, Hull and South Holderness.

“I hope that, as disciples of Jesus in the Diocese of York, we will invite all we meet to get to know Jesus more deeply.” The Archbishop will be off to Hull West from February 10 to February 12.
