A POPULAR cafe has been ranked among the best places to have breakfast in the UK.

The Guardian named The Pig & Pastry, in Bishopthorpe Road, in its 50 best breakfast places.

Food writers for the national newspaper said it is one of the best places to start the day and ranked it amongst seven others in its north east, Yorkshire and The Humber section.

The newspaper said: “Few visitors think to venture beyond York’s city walls, but you may well encounter a queue outside Pig & Pastry if you do.

“Picky locals make a beeline for this friendly, fastidiously foodist cafe – one of a number of credible independents on Bishopthorpe Road – where high-quality regional ingredients (Staal Smokehouse kippers, Taste Tradition rare-breed ham) are used in breakfasts that include serious bacon baps, waffles and specials such as pancake stacks or eggs benedict jazzed-up with Cumberland sausage.”

It recommends ordering the £6 Brindisa chorizo and scrambled eggs on sourdough toast.

Other cafes on the list included The Greedy Pig Kitchen and Laynes, both in Leeds.

This is not the first time a York cafe or restaurant has won national acclaim.

In December 2014 men’s magazine Esquire named the breakfast served at Bettys as one of the 25 Best Breakfasts in Britain.

It was praised for offering a menu with an "eccentric hybrid of Swiss cafe and English teahouse”.
