A popular York music pub will hold a birthday celebration this coming weekend.

Chris Sherrington said that when he and his colleagues took over Fulford Arms in Fulford they tried to be a "bit of everything".

But their success with providing a venue for music and other acts had persuaded them to concentrate on being a entertainment centre, regularly staging all-day events.

The pub is now hoping to expand its venue services by allowing community groups and others to use its entertainment space for activities with or without music during the afternoons.

On Saturday [January 21] it stages its "3rd birthday" celebration to mark three years since the current landlords took over.

"In the last six months, we have very much just accepted we are a music venue," said Chris. "There aren't many small venues in York. We wanted to have a place where local bands can perform."

The pub also works with external promoters to bring acts in from outside the city who would not otherwise come to York. It specialises in putting on programmes with a wide range of music.

Among those that took part in the all-day event featuring several York acts on January 7 were Alterego Ceilidh Band, who shared the stage with nine others.

This Saturday's programme from 2.30pm to 11pm will include many artists who perform regularly at the pub with a wide range of music on two stages. The final list is still being worked out, but nine bands and acts have confirmed that they will attend.

There will also be karaoke sessions and a DJ will take over when the live acts finish at 11pm.

The pub is hoping that the entertainment area of the pub will be used by fitness classes and art groups as well as for rehearsals and showing films.
