A TEENAGER accused of murdering seven-year-old Katie Rough has appeared today at Leeds Crown Court, via video link.
The 15-year-old girl was dressed in a blue jumper and black trousers. She cannot be named due to her age.
She did not speak during the five-minute hearing.
The Recorder of Leeds, Peter Collier QC, remanded her in secure youth accommodation and ordered her to appear again on February 16 for a plea and trial preparation hearing.
The teenager looked straight ahead as she listened to proceedings.
The judge and barristers did not wear robes during the proceedings. The Recorder explained to the defendant that only a Crown Court judge can deal with the charges she faces, namely murder and possession of an offensive weapon, specifically a Stanley knife.
Around ten members of Katie's family, including her grandparents, were in court for the proceedings.
No bail application was made.
Colin Byrne, for the teenager, answered on her behalf to confirm her name.
