A DISTRAUGHT mum has set up a crowdfunding page to raise money for tragic Katie Rough's family.

Maggie Jackson, 28, started fundraising within 24 hours of the seven-year-old's death and has already raised more than £20,000.

Maggie, a mum of two from Heworth, said she was determined to help following the tragedy.

She said: "I'm a mum with two little boys and one is the same age as Katie, so what the mum must be going through really hit home.

"I didn't want to invade their privacy and contact her directly, I just wanted to do something and go for it because I felt really bad for the family.

"It has already been shared by my friends and people have picked up on it really quickly."

Police were called to Alness Drive, in Woodthorpe, at 4.30pm on Monday and found the youngster with life threatening injuries.

She was taken to York Hospital where she died a short time later.

Numerous floral tributes have now been left near where she was found and a relative has posted a message of thanks on the online donation page.

A 15-year-old girl has been charged with murder and possession of an offensive weapon.

Ms Jackson added: "I'm in shock about what's happened.

"In this day and age you can't trust your kids to be anywhere. It's really sad.

"The money will go towards whatever the family need it for. The community is really pulling together to help out.

"York is not a bad area and that's why people are so sad because it is a close community.

"It's not normal for York at all and everyone is pulling together and wants to help."
