A CHARITY in York say an initiative to help children receive a better start in life would be an exciting move for the Government to pursue.
Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon handed out the country’s first baby boxes to parents as part of a Scottish Government pilot project where parents of newborns are given baby boxes which contain nappies, clothes, books and other useful items, with the box itself able to be used as an alternative to a Moses basket.
York-based charity Bundles Of Joy operates in a similar way, giving out baskets, clothing, towels, nappies and other essential items to parents of newborns who have been referred to them by health or professional agencies.
Team coordinator, Carly Price, said: “We are excited about the possibility of an initiative like this in England as it would mean all babies, regardless of the situation they are born into, would be provided with what they need in those precious newborn days. While we know that there would be many details to work out, such as funding, we would welcome a governmental decision to start a discussion.”
