FOLLOWING on from their headline set on Glastonbury’s Acoustic Stage, country duo The Shires are on tour promoting their second album, My Universe.

Formed in 2013 and comprising of musician andvocalist Ben Earle and singer Crissie Rhodes, The Shires are the first UK country act to be signed to a major Nashville label, as well as the first one to ever have a top ten album.

American country singer-songwriter Canaan Smith made his entrance to start off the night, mixing a powerful vocal performance with strong but simple music. While his set was short, his talent and genuinely sincere delivery made for a great opening act.

The Shires themselves entered the Barbican to uproarious applause. Rhodes and Earle shared nice harmonies and a very natural companionship on stage, making it easy to see why they’ve soared in popularity together. While derivative of their chosen genre, their energy and musical ability was undeniable, with popular hits like My Universe and All Over Again going down extremely well.

There were several points where the entire crowd were on their feet, merrily stamping and clapping and singing along. Even when the show was over the fans could not be silenced, demanding an encore. The Shires repaid their adoration with not one, not two, but three extra songs.

The Shires have brought the spirit of American country music to their UK homeland. With plans to go back to the USA next year to "break America", it’s clear they don’t plan on going quiet any time soon.
