THE Salvation Army says it is experiencing a dramatic surge in demand for its help as York families struggle to cope with the cost of Christmas.

Major Andrew Dunkinson said it had seen an increase in the number of statutory agency referrals requesting its assistance this festive season.

“Last year, we helped 550 children with Christmas gifts and over 220 families with food, but that number has already increased to 680 children and 317 families,” he said.

“This represents a dramatic increase in the number of families who are really struggling in the present economic climate.”

He said management and staff at Streamline Taxis had provided a welcome boost by donating gifts to the Salvation Army’s Christmas Toy Appeal.

People can also help by giving to The Press’ Toys & Tins Appeal, which urges readers to donate toys and tins of food for the Salvation Army and also to Independent Domestic Abuse Services (IDAS), formerly the York’s Women’s Aid Refuge, which helps victims of domestic violence.

Gifts can be left at our office reception in Walmgate during weekday office hours by no later than December 14.
