STARS from York Theatre Royal’s panto Cinderella joined the Lord Mayor of York tonight as he switched on the Christmas tree lights in a packed St Helen’s Square.
The Lord Mayor, Cllr Dave Taylor, said the ceremony - attended by hundreds of shoppers and revellers - marked the start of York’s seasonal celebrations and late night shopping.
The Shepherd Group Brass Band played carols and favourite Christmas music, while local choirs sang around St Leonard’s Hospice’s ‘Light up a Life’ tree, on which the lights shine in memory of loved ones and friends.
Panto stars Hermione Lynch and A J Powell, who play Prince Charming and Prissy, one of the ugly sisters, led the traditional countdown.
Yesterday also marked the start of the St Nicholas Fair, featuring more than 100 stallholders, and of Thor’s Tipi, the Scandinavian style tipi selling festive drinks and food.
