POLICE in East Yorkshire have used an unmarked lorry to catch motorists driving while using a mobile phone.

Humberside Police said a plain liveried HGV was hired last week, which was driven and parked up by a police driver.

"The passenger in the lorry - a second officer – then used the raised vantage point to spot people using a mobile phone whilst driving," said a spokesman.

"A support team in unmarked police cars - in constant touch with officers in the lorry – then stopped and dealt with any offending drivers with words of advice, driver education courses, fixed penalty notices or summons to court."

"During the operation, 103 people were stopped for mobile phone use, 7 for not using their seat belt, 3 for not having insurance, 2 for not driving with proper control, 1 for careless driving and 1 for red light contravention."

Operation Parochial involved the Roads Policing Team in partnership with Safer Roads Humber, with funding from Safer Roads Humber.
