A PETITION calling for the Dean of York Minster to be sacked has been signed by almost 300 people.

Supporters of the former bell ringers who were stripped of their prestigious duties on health and safety grounds have set up the online campaign to remove Vivienne Faull, as the controversy surrounding the cathedral's volunteers shows no sign of going away.

"She has become an embarrassment to the Minster, and to York," reads a description accompanying the petition on the 38 degrees website.

"She is not fit for purpose in the role of Dean."

People who have already signed the document claim the Dean's behaviour has been "unchristian" and have urged the Archbishop of York and the Archbishop of Canterbury to move her on.
