FOR the first time in more than two decades, new council houses will be built in Selby.

Selby District Council has announced it will build the first new council homes in 25 years, with five bungalows planned at East Acres and St Edwards Close, in Byram.

The new homes will be much needed accommodation for older and vulnerable residents, and work began on the site on Wednesday, September 21.

Janet Waggott is interim chief executive of the council and said: “It is an exciting time to be part of a council that is leading the way by building brand new council homes. These homes will be built to high standards and will provide homes for vulnerable and older people in the heart of the community.

“This development supports our long-term plans to improve the supply of housing and ensure that the homes that are needed in our district are built where they are needed.”

Council leader Mark Crane said: “This new development will help provide five much needed homes for older or vulnerable people directly in the area where they need them.”
