A WORKING men’s club has reopened with a new vision for customers, 12 months after it was demolished.

Holgate Working Men’s Club was razed to the ground in September 2015 after owners were given permission to tear down the New Lane building and replace it with a smaller clubhouse.

The Holgate, as it is now known, has moved away from its roots as a club and is opening its doors to everyone.

John Winspear, steward and licensee, said while the two-storey venue is still officially a working men’s club, it is open to everyone and not subject to the rules of the Club and Institutes Union (CIU).

He said: “We have re-branded it.

“We are now open to anyone and people can come in and no longer have to sign in as a working men’s club.

“It’s a brand new building so we are calling it The Holgate to attract some new faces.

“I have been here 36 years as a steward and licensee and the new building has taken some getting used to.

“It’s smaller and cleaner, and it helps us because running costs are cheaper and the business rates are down too.”

The new premises cater for sports fans and boast a new snooker table, dart board and dominoes to satisfy the competitive side of punters.

Football fans can also enjoy watching Premier League and Champions League games on two new televisions in the bar, which have BT Sport.

A change in opening hours will now see the club open its doors from 4pm - instead of 7pm - on weekdays to attract those looking for a drink after work, while over the weekend, drinkers can stay inside from noon until midnight.

Mr Winspear added: “People can enjoy a pint of Fosters and John Smiths for £2.60.

“We are very friendly and will welcome anybody in here.

“We have tried to move forward and cater for everyone.

“A small function room is still available for anyone who would like to use it.”

Meanwhile, six new three-storey townhouses were built behind the club as part of the new development, and they are currently on the market. To book the function room call 01904 798373 or Mr Winspear on 07917 636066.
