CRIME across the East Riding of Yorkshire has increased significantly over the past year, new figures have revealed.

The number of recorded crimes in the 12 months to the end of August this year has surged by 14 per cent, compared to the 12 months before.

The latest statistics from Humberside Police show that the number of crimes has gone up from 12,867 to 14,724 - a rise from 347 a week to 283 a week.

In terms of specific crimes, one of the most notable increases is violence without injury, which has soared by 35 per cent.

There were 1,497 incidents of violence without injury in the 12 months to the end of August 2015, and in the following year there were 2,032 incidents.

There were 218 more crimes involving violence with injury, which increased from 1,555 to 1,773.

Shoplifting went up from 1,034 to 1,234 in the following 12 months.

The number of sexual offences also increased, from 435 to 490.

Robbery has seen a rise from 49 to 70, while non-domestic burglary is up from 1,327 to 1,510.

There was a 35 per cent jump in bicycle thefts, with 415 bicycles stolen in the 12 months up to August this year compared to 306 the year before.

For all other theft offences, there was an increase from 1,730 to 1,821.

Criminal damage and arson is up by nearly 20 per cent, from 2,073 to 2,483.

Other crimes have risen from 1,078 to 1,165.

However, vehicle offences have dropped from 1,048 to 976 and domestic burglary has also fallen from 673 to 661.

Humberside Police declined to comment on the increases, when contacted by The Press.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s safer and stronger communities overview and scrutiny sub-committee will consider the figures at its meeting next Thursday at County Hall in Beverley.

The police and crime commissioner for Humberside, Keith Hunter, is expected to attend the meeting to give the sub-committee a verbal report on crime in the region.

The sub-committee will also discuss a report from the council’s director of environment and neighbourhood services, Nigel Leighton, about the Community Safety Partnership, which outlines the partnership’s structure and purpose.
