I RECENTLY had visitors from Denmark and was happy to show them around the beautiful Yorkshire countryside, which they admired greatly for its scenic splendour and fabulous views.
However, my trips to York were not rewarded in quite the same way.
Much as the city has a fantastic array of historical wonders to enjoy, the journey in and back was marred by the amount of litter strewn along the hedgerows and roadways.
Coming from a country that takes an inordinate amount of pride in its cleanliness, they couldn’t understand why it was possible for a city as delightful as York to neglect this aspect of civic pride.
Why is it we are unable to stop litter louts from spoiling the look of this wonderful city?
Can anyone suggest ways of tackling this eyesore so we can all enjoy a trip into York without the distraction of plastic bags, food trays, empty cans and the like scattered along the highways?
