NEW patrols will aim to crack down on antisocial behaviour at York railway station.

British Transport Police will launch Operation Stronghold this weekend, with high visibility patrols to reassure and engage with weekend rail users, and cut down on alcohol-fuelled antisocial behaviour.

The patrols will run from early evening at key stations including York, Leeds, Newcastle and Hull.

Inspector Gary Jones said: "By increasing our visibility and activity we will be reassuring the public that they can travel in a safe and secure environment.

"Put simply, Op Stronghold is about having officers at key locations at key times to reduce crime and keep the travelling public safe. We want everyone using the rail network at the weekend to enjoy a safe and secure journey. We will be at key stations that attract a number of revellers to the city centre at a weekend to offer reassurance."

Rail users will also be encouraged to report crime or antisocial behaviour to BTP using their new text number, 61016.
