AN incredible collection of old and rare postcards of York is to be auctioned next week.

A private collector, who wishes to remain anonymous, is selling her collection, which includes around 1,000 York postcards.

They are contained in nine separate themed albums, including one with a large collection of military-related images, which includes images of Military Sunday events in York in the early 1900s, and York Military Tattoos.

Other cards show photos and sketches of well-known York landmarks, individual events, and suburban or village scenes.

Boulton & Cooper of Malton are auctioning the albums next Wednesday (July 27). The postcards are being sold on an album-by-album basis. Estimates start at £100-£150 per album and go up to £250-£300 for others.

John McKay, auctioneers' assistant at Boulton & Cooper, said: "There are some really unusual postcards that we have never seen before."

The auction is at 10am in The Milton Rooms in Malton Market Place, with viewing the day before and from 9am on the day.

The auction catalogue is here.

Anyone wishing to bid must register with Boulton & Cooper. This can be done on the day, or by phoning 01653 696151 in advance.
