TWENTY SIX trees at a York shopping centre are to be felled and replaced due to their poor condition.

City of York Council has approved the plans at York Designer Outlet near Naburn.

The site's owners commissioned a tree survey by Tree Care Company, to assess the safety and health of all trees in and around the site.

Callum Andrew, for the company, inspected 282 individual trees and 51 groups of trees, and identified 26 that should be felled.

His report found that problems included an aggressive fungus in one sycamore and one lime, general decay in other trees, and weakness in an Austrian pine that meant it was at greater risk of falling in a storm.

All those being felled are to be replaced.

Separate controversial plans by the owners of Clifton Moor Retail Park are still being considered by the council.

The owners want to fell 103 trees because they say they are blocking views of the shops, but there have been widespread objections.
