A BOOK of honour has been produced to remember the fallen heroes of World War One from Pickering.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first day of the Battle of the Somme on Friday (July 1), a team of volunteer researchers from Pickering's Beck Isle Museum have created the book of remembrance to honour the 79 men from the town who went to war but did not return.

The book is the result of nearly three years of research by the volunteers.

Many hours have been spent delving into the archives to find out more about the 79 men, seeking out and identifying photographs, studying war memorials, old almanacs, newspapers and online resources.

Mike Haigh, chairman of the board of trustees at Beck Isle Museum. said: "The book is a way of making sure that we continue to honour the sacrifice of those men who did not return from the war and to re-tell their individual stories.

"We would like to thank the team of volunteers who have contributed so much time and dedication to the project and to members of the public that have aided our research by providing information and photographs."

The book of remembrance can be viewed in the museum from Friday. It rests on a wooden plinth, which was commissioned especially for this purpose. Visitors to the museum can also browse a digital version of the book using an iPad.

The book is part of an ongoing project to celebrate the centenary of World War One, supported by a grant from Arts Council England through the Remember Scarborough Project.

The next stage of the project at Beck Isle Museum is to publish a book detailing more about these men, including their lives before the war and their military careers.

If you have any information or photographs about any of the soldiers in the book, contact the museum.
