YORK’S pink army turned out in force over the weekend to raise more than £360,000 for Cancer Research UK.

Almost 5,000 women took part in the obstacle run, Pretty Muddy, on Saturday at the city’s Knavesmire, with about 2,200 people involved

in the 5k and 10k Race for Life runs on Sunday.

Paige Platt, 23, travelled from Malton to take part in the race for the second time, which she ran for her mother Lisa-Marie, a breast cancer survivor.

Paige said: "I did it last year so thought I would keep it up. It was way easier this year, as I'd just started running last year.

"My mum had breast cancer before, my granddad had bowel and liver cancer, and my aunt had breast cancer. I have quite a few friends who're affected by it so basically I'm running for everyone."

Lisa-Marie said: "I think this run is so important, as people don't understand how expensive the research is. I found my first lump in my right breast in 2009. People always say life begins at 40, and I copped for cancer.

"I'm amazingly proud of Paige, it means a lot to me. She's my whole life, I don't know what I would have done without her. I wouldn't have got through it."

Melissa Hutchinson and Amber Nash travelled from Darlington to take part in Saturday's event in memory of their grandmother Patricia Brack, who died at the age of 70 from breast cancer.

Melissa said: "They gave her 18 months to live, and she lasted six or seven years. She was a tough cookie.

"It's our first time doing this and we felt it was important. If you don't know anyone who's had cancer, you don't really think about it."

Amber said: "It wasn't too bad, but we need to get to the gym.

"We're very proud of ourselves and we think Patricia would be as well. She'll be laughing at us now."

The Press will be running a gallery of pictures from both events on Sunday, with full coverage in Monday's paper.
