A YOUNG driver crashed into two parked cars then drove off without stopping.

Witnesses heard “quite a loud crash” and a car revving before it left the scene in Westbourne Road, Selby, at 11.30pm on April 14, said Martin Butterworth, prosecuting at York Magistrates Court.

The driver was Dominic Alexander Evans, 20. The next day, he handed himself in to police.

He told them he was arguing with his girlfriend and someone had dropped a cigarette just before the crash. He left the parked cars substantially damaged, and damaged his own car.

Evans, of Main Street, Hemingbrough, pleaded guilty to careless driving and failure to stop after an accident. He was fined £350 with £85 prosecution costs and ordered to pay a £35 statutory surcharge. He also received five penalty points on his licence.

For him, duty solicitor Akef Akbar said he had been arguing with his girlfriend, who had been a passenger in the car, as they approached a bend.

“He was stressed out, misjudged the bend and collided with the two cars. He scraped one and hit the bumper of the other,” said the solicitor.

He had not wanted to go out but his girlfriend had rang asking for a lift and he had gone to collect her.

He had panicked after hitting the cars and driven off, though he had stopped for three or four minutes some distance off. After parking the car overnight, he contacted the police.
