FAMILIES can explore their adventurous side when a new activity centre opens its doors over the bank holiday weekend.

The new £5.7million Summit Indoor Adventure, in Selby, opens to the public on Saturday and has everything from an aerial trek to indoor skiing and an adventure climbing wall and indoor skate park.

When the ribbon was officially cut last week, Cllr Mark Crane, leader of Selby District Council, said: "This isn’t just about the fantastic climbing wall, the great bowling facilities or the amazing ski simulator – the only one of this kind outside of London by the way – this is about putting Selby and the whole district firmly on the map."

Residents can also keep their feet on the ground with events planned around York and the area throughout the weekend.

Among the events taking place is the Southbank Spring Fair at Millthorpe School on Monday, May 30.

A variety of local traders are already on the bill, including, artisan food and drink producers, independent craft retailers, and charities.

Organisers have also promised fun attractions and activities for children of all ages.

Jason Kelly, co-owner of organisers Reyt Good Events, said: “We were looking for a good location in the heart of York, which is easily accessible to everyone, and which can handle the number of traders and visitors expected on the day."

Age-old village celebrations are also being held on Monday at the 2016 Poppleton Children’s Sports Day which continues a long tradition of sports days dating back to the early 1900s, and will feature Taiko Japanese drumming, stalls, crafts, face painting, tombola, children’s games, fancy dress on a space theme and birds of prey.

The impact made by the First World War on Edwardian women’s fashions and clothing is going to be explored at York Castle Museum throughout the weekend, with costumed demonstrations on the museum’s catwalk.

Allerthorpe Lakeland Park, in Pocklington, is open throughout the bank holiday for families who prefer to step off dry land and take part in water activities, including sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and open water swimming.

Duncombe Park Country Fair and Malton Food Lovers Festival will also take place in Ryedale. Freestyle Motocross display team - Broke FMX - will be flying through the air at the event, near Helmsley.

The grounds of the stately home will be taken over by a farmers' market, stalls, funfair rides and a ferret roulette.

West Lancs Dog Display Team and the Bilsdale Silver Band are also lined up to entertain the crowds.

The Food Lovers Festival, on Saturday and Sunday, is set across Malton's streets and features heaving stalls, craft beer and cider, street food, talks, tastings, celebrity chef demonstrations and cookery lessons are all on the menu.
