HAVE you missed your regular fix of Vikings since Jorvik was flooded on Boxing Day?

Well, to say thanks for your patience, the Jorvik group will be opening its four other attractions in the city free of charge to York residents this weekend.

No Vikings, admittedly. But people will be able to find out all about Richard III and his world at the Richard III experience at Monkgate Bar; learn about the man who toppled York's favourite medieval king and replaced him on the throne at the Henry VII experience at Micklegate Bar; have a go at doing some hands-on archaeology at DIG; or drop in to Barley Hall - all free.

It's a great time for children to visit Barley Hall in particular. To tie in with the return of the York Mystery Plays to the Minster, the attraction has recreated a mystery plays wagon - where children can recreate scenes from the plays to their hearts' content.

"Our wagon set includes backdrops for two key stories from the Bible – the great flood and the nativity,” says Barley Hall's Paul Ruxton. “Our young performers can choose to take a role from the mighty to the meek, with costumes to play God, sheep and many characters in between during their visit, and a seating area where parents can enjoy the show!”

All you'll need to do to get free admittance on Saturday or Sunday to Barley Hall or any of the other Jorvik attractions will be to show proof of identity and residence - a York Card, driving licence or utility bill.

Sarah Maltby, director of attractions for York Archaeological Trust, said: “We were overwhelmed with kind messages when Jorvik was flooded, with many local people asking how they could get involved to support us, so this weekend will give them a chance to see our fantastic attractions."

People will also be able to find out more about Jorvik's #CampaignCanute fundraising campaign which, in true Viking spirit, is aiming to raise money over and above the insurance payout to ensure that when Jorvik does re-open, it will be better than ever.
