A FORMER Subway employee has spoken out about the level of hygiene found in a York branch.

Eleanor Boyes, 18, was asked to leave her job in the Clifford Street outlet after she refused to serve customers.

She claims she arrived at work to open up last Sunday morning and found blocked sinks and dirty containers full of salad and vegetables.

The teenager says staff working the shift before her had not cleaned up properly and left sinks unclean and swimming with food.

She said: "I called my bosses and told them the sinks needed sorting out and everything that had been prepared needed binning, but they said everything should be left.

"In my opinion the shop should have been closed and there should have been a deep clean. It wasn't clean and it wasn't sanitary.

"I want to keep customers happy and it would have felt wrong serving regulars from that."

Miss Boyes says she was already serving her notice for twice failing to open the shop on time, but claims she does not have an axe to grind and feels strongly about standards at the shop, which she claims have got worse in recent months.

She added: "I want to point out these flaws now I haven't got the worry of losing my job hanging over my head "I'm just saying this is not right."

The franchisee declined to comment.

A spokesman for Subway said they were aware of problems with the sinks last Friday.

He said: "As soon as the franchisee of the York store was made aware of the plumbing issue a plumber was notified and immediately attended the premises on Friday April, 22.

"However, the problem was unable to be resolved until Tuesday morning.

"To be able to trade over the weekend, the team allowed the sinks to drain fully before cleaning out any food debris and refilled with clean water.

"The pictures are as a result of the final clean being left to drain between the evening and morning shifts.

"In terms of the employment matter, as all Subway stores are independently owned and operated by franchisees we are unable to comment on individual cases."
