A YORK rehabilitation centre for patients with complex neurological conditions has shone in two separate inspections.

Woodlands Neurological Rehabilitation Centre in Thief Lane, off Hull Road, was rated 'good' by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and 'good to excellent' by brain injury charity Headway UK.

CQC inspectors visited Woodlands on February 17 and 18, with their report published on April 13 marking it good under all headings - whether the service was safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.

Registered manager Karen Auker said she was "delighted" with the report into the centre, which cares for up to 27 people.

"The entire team work hard every day to provide excellent care and rehabilitation for individuals with very complex neurological conditions," she said. "I’m proud of the developments we have made over the last year which have contributed to this fantastic outcome.”

A family member quoted in the CQC report said: “I feel the staff are friendly, helpful and caring. My relative is treated as a human being here and staff give them respect and honour their wishes.”

The report continues: “All the responses we received were positive about the service.

"Comments included, ‘All the staff are lovely’ and, ‘I feel safe here'.

"One person told us, ‘The staff are caring and helpful’ and three visitors said, ‘The staff have been polite, helpful and respectful'.

"All of the staff who we interviewed reported that their colleagues were caring and compassionate.”

Headway UK inspected Woodlands in March as part of their Approved Provider Scheme.

It found that “Woodlands continues to fulfil all the standards required by Headway, rating within the range good to excellent across all domains.”

Headway will continue to recommend Woodlands as a specialist provider for individuals with brain injury.

Professor Mike Barnes, clinical director of Woodlands owner Christchurch Group, said: “The recent CQC and Headway inspections have highlighted the excellent team work and commitment to safe, well-led, good quality care and rehabilitation at Woodlands.

"We will continue to focus on providing the very best outcomes for our residents, friends and families.”
