EIGHT years of fundraising came to fruition with the official opening of Archbishop of York's CE Junior School's new music room.

Ian Donaghy, lead singer of York band Huge, cut the ribbon for the £60,000 facility yesterday (April 15) as past and present pupils and staff looked on.

Headteacher Jonathan Green said: "I have been headteacher for eight years and this was probably the first project we looked at doing.

"We have a very busy musical schedule, but didn't have enough space for it.

"A lot of music lessons took place in the library or the staff room, basically anywhere and everywhere.

"This music room is the culmination of eight years of fundraising and hard work, bringing the whole community together to help us out.

"We are very pleased. It gives us just enough space."

To mark the occasion, current pupils gave guitar, drumming and singing performances, while the wind band also played.

Also playing were pianist and former pupil Sean Greenheld, a student at the Royal Northern College of Music, and Jacob Burtenshaw, another old boy, who is set to study music at Manchester University.

Celebrations continued yesterday (April 15) evening with local band Traces, whose lead singer is Year 6 teacher Tracey Richards, playing a concert for supporters of the project.
