I'M finding it hard to believe my eyes. According to your report "Lottery bid for Mystery Plays" (The Press, May 28), the council's new executive member for leisure and culture is to commission a multicultural reinterpretation of the Mystery Plays for 2012.
How utterly appalling: he has missed the point completely.
The reason that the people of York work so hard to put on these plays, and the reason that visitors come in their thousands to see them, is because performing the Mystery Plays is continuing a tradition going back to medieval days.
If the plays are messed about with to reflect the political whims of today, Mr Vassie will find that the volunteers who help stage the plays, and the visitors who support them, will simply stay away.
