THE new High Sheriff of North Yorkshire is planning to promote the Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution, which supports farming families in need.

John Furness, who will take up the post on March 24 for one year, replacing Charlie Forbes Adam, will be sworn in at York Crown Court.

He said: "Having been involved with farming and rural affairs all my life I feel it is now time to give something back to the community."

Mr Furness is the owner of a farming estate within the North Yorkshire Moor's National Park and is a council member of the Great Yorkshire Show.
