KATE Myers had no idea her boyfriend was planning a flash-mob proposal, but found herself the centre of a crowd on onlookers singing and dancing on the Minster steps.

Kate's boyfriend of four years, Zach Spargo, had roped in a team of musicians and dancers - not to mention family members who had travelled from North Wales - to help him pop the question. As the Minster clock struck eleven on Saturday, Kate and Zach's quiet day out in York was soon transformed.

Zach, 25, had spent months planning the gesture, contacting the University of York St John's musical production society to get them on board, and persuading family members to come in on the plan as well.

He said: "I was terrified, I hadn't slept for a week. Kate said afterwards that I had been very quiet all day, and she knew something was up."

The couple had left home in York and headed into the centre, only to find themselves at the Minster for 11am when the musician Jessica Maynard - ready and waiting with her guitar broke into Bruno Mars' "Marry You".

At this point, Zach had even arranged for a "decoy couple" to be in place so Kate wouldn't realise the song was for her. Seconds later, the singers turned to Kate and as Zach picked up a guitar and started singing their friends and family started one by one revealing themselves and bringing Kate flowers.

Zach got down on one knee and Kate, 24, said yes, and the couple are now looking forward to the big day either this summer or in 2017.

"We are ecstatic, we're just in a euphoric state," Zach added.

Despite the months of planning the Yorkshire weather nearly ruined the plans. "We were supposed to get to the Minster for 11am, but just as we left the house it started to rain. Kate wanted to get the bus, but that would have got us in far too early."

Saturday was all the more special as it was the last day the couple would spend in York before moving back home to North Wales, after Zach finished his physiotherapy training in York.
