FLYING Scotsman has returned to York on her historic "inaugural run" from King’s Cross.

She arrived in York on Thursday afternoon to huge crowds, and there was then a celebration and official "opening ceremony" at the National Railway Museum.

The newly restored locomotive will be on public display in the NRM’s North Yard for the first time. 

March 2

A second chance to see the great locomotive being cleaned in the North Yard, this time ahead of its move into the NRM proper for its Great Hall display.

March 3 to 6

Flying Scotsman takes pole position on the NRM’s turntable in the Great Hall.

March 12 to September 25

February 27-July 31: Need for speed (family science show)

Why are we always trying to go faster? How are we able to travel so fast on trains and which famous locomotives have broken incredible speed records? All this and more in the NRM’s fast-paced interactive science show exploring our need for speed. Runs daily during weekend and school holidays.

March 25-May 8: Service with style

Embark on a fascinating journey on board the world’s best-known express train. Immerse yourself in the glamour and allure of the Flying Scotsman service throughout the eras, right up to the present day, by stepping on to three carriages of the kind that travelled the flagship London-Edinburgh route.

Each carriage offers a different sensory experience to bring the Flying Scotsman story of speed, innovation, fame and luxury to life, from 1920s cinema cars to 1930s cocktail bars.

March 25-April 10: Easter holiday activities — special events in Station Hall for younger visitors

  • Build your own Flying Scotsman (daily from Friday, March 25 to Sunday April 10, then weekends only until Sunday, May 8 10.30am-4.30pm, in the Station Hall along the Promenade).
  • Build your own model of Flying Scotsman and learn how the locomotive works. A small charge will apply.
  • Storytelling (daily from Friday, March 25 to Sunday, April 10, then weekends only until Sunday, May 8, Platform 6 in Station Hall).
  • Join one of the NRM’s explainers for an interactive story involving one of the most famous steam locomotives in the world. Suitable for under-sixes.
  • Platform 4 Theatre presents The 10am, Friday, March 25 to Sunday, April 10, Platform 6 in Station Hall.
  • Join Platform 4 Theatre for a short performance and learn about Flying Scotsman. Free. Suitable for all the family. Shows daily at 10.50am, noon, 1pm and 2.50pm.
