A YORK Beavers group is facing closure unless it urgently finds a new leader.

The group, which has met at Clifton Methodist Church for 15 years, is searching for a new assistant.

The post will become free when current deputy Joan Sheard steps down at Christmas after five years’ service.

Beaver leader Colin Lea said: “We need somebody urgently.”

He added: “We are looking for somebody who likes working with children. They will get to experience a wide range of activities and it will be great fun.”

Recent activities Clifton Beavers have enjoyed include an international food night, a tour of Tesco supermarket, a trip to Pets at Home as well as visits to diverse places of worship across the city.

Mr Lea said the role would be incredibly rewarding for somebody who wants to learn new skills, while researching the numerous badges the youngsters work towards. Training would be provided, he added.

Joan said she loved her five years working with the Bootham-based Beavers.

Highlights include a “very cold” sleepover in York Minster and three camping trips.

“It has been a very enjoyable experience,” she added. “All three of my sons enjoyed Cubs and Scouts so I thought I would put something back.”

Also on the move is volunteer Jack Rank, 21, who has been helping with Cubs and Beavers for five years.

Anyone interested in leading the group, and who is willing to commit to helping on Thursdays between 5pm and 7pm, should email Sean Powdrell from Clifton Methodist Scout Group at: sean_powdrell@hotmail.com
