FOR refugees who have fled here from war-torn Syria and other places of oppression or conflict, Britain must now also be their country and their home.

I have made several journeys around Europe, which is a freedom I value immensely, but my life has never depended on my making a journey.

Never have I left my neighbourhood behind under attack and decimated by shells and bombs.

I trust and hope that people coming to York from these circumstances will know that support is available for any problems and will be reassured that Britain is home to people of many different cultures and beliefs.

The conflicts in the Middle East and North Africa have given rise to the largest displacement of refugees since the Second World War.

As a large and wealthy European nation, Britain’s offer to take 4,000 more people per year until 2020 is not a big enough contribution to the alleviation of this humanitarian crisis.
