YORK'S newest pub opened on Friday night.

Leeds Brewery has converted the old Plunkets restaurant building in High Petergate into The Eagle and Child.

The company tweeted on Friday afternoon that it would be open that evening.

As reported previously in The Press, the company is reviving an historic York pub name, with a pub having operated under that name in Shambles from the 1700s until 1925 (below). Another of the same name was in Pavement in the 16th century.

York Press:

Plunkets was in High Petergate for 38 years, and the building had been a restaurant under other names for more than 12 years before that, but it closed in September.

York Press:

The opening is one of two major developments for local food and drink  enthusiasts this weekend. A new bar and restaurant is also opening on the corner of Coppergate and Piccadilly. See our preview here.
