HUNDREDS queued for hours to snap up freebies as a new Aldi store opened in North Yorkshire.

The shop opened in Low Street in Sherburn in Elmet at 8am on Thursday.

A 'golden ticket' promotion meant the first 100 customers received prizes.

Lee Craine waited outside for nine hours, from 11pm on Wednesday, to be at the front of the queue, winning the top prize of a tablet PC.

Other customers won 24" LED TVs, bread makers, halogen ovens, DAB radios and shopping vouchers.

The development has created 20 jobs and staff are also donating a range of products to the 1st All Saints Sherburn in Elmet Scout Group, to mark their opening.

Store manager Richard Bowker said: “It’s been great to see so many customers welcoming Aldi to Sherburn in Elmet this morning and we would like to thank them for their patience throughout the development.

“We enjoyed seeing so many people walk away with a prize and hope that everyone enjoyed the golden ticket event, as well as the fresh products on offer. We look forward to supporting the local scout group in the coming weeks.”
