THE DEATH of a worker at a North Yorkshire distribution depot may have been due to natural causes, police have said.

The 50-year-old man died on Sunday, October 4, at the Sainsbury's distribution depot in Sherburn in Elmet, near Selby, which is run by haulage and logistics company Wincanton.

North Yorkshire Police previously said the man, from Wakefield, died following an incident with a 'shunter' tractor-type vehicle, and a spokeswoman for Wincanton said "details of the incident are unclear".

Today, a spokeswoman for North Yorkshire Police said: "We can now advise that a post mortem has been held and although the cause of the man’s death has not yet been confirmed, a preliminary report reveals a possible natural cause of death.

"At this stage, the coroner has opened an investigation pending further enquiries. A decision will be made at a later date whether an inquest is to be opened."

A health and safety investigation by Selby District Council remains ongoing.
