RUNNERS will hold a minute's applause before the Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon in memory of David Colley.

The 58-year-old, from Hull, who died at the end of last month's Great North Run, had been due to compete in Sunday's race.

David was set to run his first marathon, having already taken part in the Run For All Yorkshire Season Ticket this year – the Leeds, York and Hull 10Ks - with his daughter Emily.

As well as the applause, Emily and David's other daughter Sarah will compete in Sunday's 10 mile race as a tribute to their father and to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.

Sarah said: “Our dad was a wonderful man who was taken from us far too soon.

"We have been overwhelmed by the support from everyone, especially the running community, and wish to express our most heartfelt thanks for this at this very difficult time.”

Emily added: “I know he'll be running beside us, shouting encouragement all the way.”

Mike Tomlinson, for the Yorkshire Marathon, said: “David had taken part in many of our events over the past few years and we were obviously extremely sad to hear this tragic news."
