NEW policies have been put in place at York's universities, in an attempt to crack down on extremism.

From this week, all universities in the UK are legally required to have policies in place to prevent students being radicalised by extremists on campus, but also to tackle gender segregation at public events.

The plans also aim to support students at risk of radicalisation, and are part of government’s latest plans to tackle extremism, under the Prevent strategy - part of the Counter-Terrorism and Security Act.

The Government's plans also state universities must have appropriate IT policies, staff training and student welfare programmes in place "to recognise and respond to the signs of radicalisation".

A spokesman for the University of York said the new policy would respect the freedoms of everyone at the university, while looking after those at risk of radicalisation.

He said: "Our colleges provide small, interdisciplinary communities that support and enrich the University experience for students and staff. They not only protect academic freedom, but also have a duty of care to their students. Our colleges together with student societies and groups have a role to play in helping to safeguard potentially vulnerable young people from radicalisation and recruitment by terrorist organisations.

"Colleges also promote the exchange of opinion and ideas, and enable debate as well as learning. The Government has stated that it has no wish to limit or interfere with this free flow of ideas, and that it will balance the need to preserve national security with protecting civil liberties."

A spokeswoman for York St John University said the university was "committed to its responsibilities related to the safeguarding of all its communities" and a member of the York and North Yorkshire Prevent Implementation Board.

She said: "The university works closely with partners, including North Yorkshire Police and Universities UK, and is currently finalising its action plan in line with the government’s Prevent duty guidance."
