A reader threatened to burn down York Explore library if staff didn't alter some of its local history books, York magistrates heard.

David Allen-McDermott claimed some wartime RAF books containing air force roundels and swastikas were inaccurate, said Hilary Reece, prosecuting.

He got angry and said to a member of staff: "When are you going to sort those books out?" and "You have got until tomorrow or I will be coming back with petrol and I am going to burn the lot."

Allen-McDermott, 46, of Hewley Avenue in Heworth, pleaded guilty to threatening to cause criminal damage by fire. He was given a six-month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £180 court costs, £85 prosecution costs and a £15 statutory surcharge.

Ms Reece said Allen-McDermott went to the central library in Museum Square in the morning of Friday, September 4.

In the local history section, he read RAF books before approaching the member of staff. He was very angry.

The staff member was unable to do as he wanted and "correct" the books, so Allen-Allen-McDermott made the threat before walking off.

The staff member was so frightened by the encounter he told his manager and the police were contacted.

In a police interview, Allen-McDermott said he was frustrated by some pictures which he said were incorrect.

He claimed he had no intention of carrying out his threat.
