POLICE have a description of a man they want to speak to the case of the Pocklington tyre slasher, who punctured tyres on nearly 100 cars in the town.

Officers working on the case were provided with a description of an adult man, slim to medium build, with short, dark hair which is balding on top. He may drive a white van.

Inspector Jo York, of Humberside Police, said: "I believe the man is local and knows the area well. There is already much talk about this around Pocklington and someone in the town must know who this is, or know something about it.

“I would urge anyone who has information to come forward and share it with us so we can identify and locate the person causing this mindless vandalism that has affected so many residents in the town."

At around £50 or more per tyre, the replacement costs for victims of the crime will have already climbed to many thousands of pounds. Some victims had three out of four tyres punctured.

One victim, father-of-three Matthew Bellwood, 25, has called for street CCTV to be installed.

His young children had planned to visit their grandmother, whom they hadn't seen for some time, but the trip had to be postponed when the family people carrier's tyres were slashed just hours before they were due to set off from their home in Victoria Road, Pocklington.

Mr Bellwood said: "I think installing permanent CCTV could absolutely do something. I would be willing to pay for it out of my taxes. I really do feel Pocklington could benefit from a more secure environment."

He also called for more help for the police to track down those responsible for the latest attacks and for anyone who knew the culprits to contact the police so they can be stopped.

He said to the vandal: "I would like them to make an apology. I would like them to show some kind of remorse. They are not thinking about what they are doing."

Extra police have been patrolling Pocklington over the weekend in a bid to identify the person responsible for causing the damage. The offences occurred all over the town last week, overnight on Wednesday and again on Thursday, in some cases specifically between 1am to 2.30am.

Police have now received 99 reports of cars having had tyres intentionally punctured.

Anyone with information should call log 196 of September 3 2015 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
