GEORDIE comedian Tony Jameson’s latest stand-up offering, Is This What I’ve Become? hilariously tackles his questions and concepts about being a 30-something-year-old man trying desperately to fit into the world around him.
This new Fringe show follows his 2014 tour of Football Manager Ruined My Life, and regular appearances at comedy clubs throughout the country. Sipping a pint throughout last Friday's 10pmperformance, his laid-back demeanour put the audience at ease, leaving nobody in fear of being targeted; his comedy was anything but cruel. Despite the somewhat small audience turnout, Jameson remained upbeat throughout the performance, even stopping to make jokes at his own expense, and beckoning the audience nearer to the front.
During the course of the hour-long show he mulled over married life, having children, not having children, and men’s struggle to buy the right jeans. Also among his musings were the cultural differences between living in York and living in the North East, namely York’s lack of a bouncer-flanked 24-hour branch of Greggs.
Jameson’s brand of observational comedy opened up a friendly dialogue between audience and performer, where each teased the other in a good-natured way. His warm personality and his relatively family-friendly material came together to produce a show that was quintessentially British, celebrating the little triumphs in life, and passive-aggressively tutting about the rest.
Perhaps the small turnout was for the best: his ability to engage with the audience was refreshing, making for a relaxed and thoroughly enjoyable show with many genuine laugh-out-loud moments.
