IT'S all change at a York primary school as its leadership team moves on to different roles.

Woodthorpe Primary School headteacher Joanna Rawling is moving to work in school improvement in the East Riding and her assistant heads Rachel Ray and Julie Gladwin are respectively moving onto a headship and to a career change.

They will be replaced by James McGann, current head of Langton Primary School in Malton, and by new assistant heads Ash Atherton and Charlotte Taylor.

Mrs Rawling said: “I am thoroughly proud of all that we have achieved at Woodthorpe, which has been done through forming positive partnerships with everyone involved with the school. I have been blessed with working with amazing staff, parents, children and governors and I wish the school continued success in its journey”.

She said they had celebrated a fifth year of improved results.

As the end of term approached, the school was awarded the 360° E-Safety Mark for helping to keep children safe online.

The teaching has been integrated into the curriculum to make children aware how to be safe and digitally literate.

Kate McDonald, computing lead, said: "It's made it a high profile issue - particularly in relation to cyber bullying. Because children are spending so much time online it's part of our response to teach them how to stay safe."

Meanwhile, reception children spent a day learning about all things Spanish. A parent who teaches Spanish helped teach the children about where Spain is in the world, the colours of the Spanish flag and they tasted Spanish food. They were each given a Spanish name and they practised how to speak in Spanish too.

Lisa Dewhurst, early years teacher, said: “The English weather didn’t let us down and it even felt like we were in Spain. The children loved tasting paella, flamenco dancing and learning about a different culture.

This really helped them develop a knowledge and understanding of the world. We had a wonderful time.”
