SUCCESS in overseas sales has seen a growing manufacturer receive a Queens Award for Enterprise as it prepares to open an office in the US.

Pocklington-based Detectamet was presented its Queen Award by the Lord-Lieutenant of the East Riding Susan Cunliffe-Lister, who was given a tour of the firm's facilities.

Founded 12 years ago, Detectamet specialises in the design, manufacture and distribution of products that are made using metal and X-Ray detectable plastics to tackle contamination in the food and pharmaceutical industries.

The Queens Award was awarded in recognition of Detectamet’s continuously growing volumes of exports to more than 100 countries, with the firm reported export growth of more than 80 per cent over the past three years.

Angela Musson-Smith, managing director at Detectamet, which employs a team of 35, said: "When my husband and I started our business in 2003 we could only dream of being honoured by an award such as this.

"Sean and I are so grateful to our staff, suppliers and local service companies who have helped us to fulfil our hopes and make our dreams come true."

The Queen's award has been presented as the firm plans to launch Detectamet Incorporated in the USA in September.

From its base in Richmond Virginia it will be able to service Detectamet's growing list of North American customers more efficiently.

Detectamet’s chief executive San Smith said: "We really hope that our success will encourage other small and medium enterprises in the county to grasp the opportunities of exporting."
