A MAN from York has launched his own bid to solve the Greek debt crisis with crowdfunded donations from ordinary Europeans.

Twenty-nine year old Thom Feeney said he was tired of politicians failing to come up with an answer to the country's economic woes, and decided the people of Europe could solve them instead.

Writing on the IndieGoGo site he set up to raise €1.6 billion the Greek economy needs, Thom said: "All this dithering over Greece is getting boring. European ministers flexing their muscles and posturing over whether they can help the Greek people of not. Why don't we the people just sort it instead?"

And in one day, the campaign has raised nearly €125,000 from 8000 people.

Thom, who now lives in London, has put together a range of benefits for people who pledge their support - from a €3 postcard of Greek Prime Minister Alex Tsipiras, sent from Greece, to a €20 bottle of Greek wine, a €5000 Greek holiday or €1 million for "a lot of gratitude from citizens of Europe and particularly the Greek people."

The campaign is more than "just a joke" he added: "I can understand why people might take it as a joke, but Crowdfunding can really help because it's just a case of getting on and doing it.

"I was fed up of the Greek crisis going round in circles, while politicians are dithering, this is affecting real people.

"I just thought, sod it, I'll have a crack."

The Greek government is hours away from a deadline to repay a €1.6 billion loan to the IMF - which it is expected to miss.
