A DYNAMIC and devoted nurse has been entered for the Health Service Hero category of the 2015 Community Pride awards.

Janet King, senior sister at the Renal Unit at York Hospital, supports patients suffering from kidney failure and their dialysis treatment.

One patient, Raymond Gilpin, nominated her for her invaluable contribution to the ward.

“I went to the unit with feelings of great trepidation," he began.

"But my fears were very soon proved unfounded with the friendly and relaxed atmosphere that abounds the unit.

“Janet has such a lovely and friendly manner in her approach to what is a very serious, critical, life-saving business for all of us patients.

"She and her staff make every patient feel so welcome and at ease on the ward.

“Janet has her finger on the pulse in organising her staff minute by minute to maintain maximum efficiency and simultaneously is hands on working on patients.

“Even though she is always busy, she makes time to have pleasant chit chat with staff and patients.

“Her pleasant demeanour and work ethic set a fine example and rub off on all other staff."

Sister King said she felt “absolutely delighted” by her patient’s nominating her.

“It is a very kind gesture on his part," she added.

"These patients come to the ward three times a week and we have created what feels like a family.

“All we can hope for is that they feel comfortable and cared for.

“I really enjoy what I do; giving back and helping people."

The awards are run in partnership with City of York Council and the primary sponsor is Benenden.

All Community Pride nominees must live in, or contribute to life in, the City of York Council area.

About three finalists from each category will be invited to the awards ceremony at York Racecourse in October, when the winners will be revealed. You can make a nomination at yorkpress.co.uk/communitypride or fill in the form on this page.
