A FOUR-YEAR-OLD boy who was struck by a car in York suffered a broken leg but escaped any serious head injury, police said tonght.

The accident happened at about 4.15pm in York Road, Acomb, close to the Betfred bookmakers.

Police cordoned off the scene and closed the road between Carr Lane and Oak Rise, and it remained closed until 7.04 pm to allow collision investigators to examine the scene.

An ambulance was sent to the scene, and a spokeswoman for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service said the boy had been taken to York Hospital.

The spokeswoman could not confirm the extent of the boy's injuries but North Yorkshire Police said he remained there with a broken leg.

A spokesman for First York said the closure of the road caused delays and diversions.

Victoria Chapman, of Harpers Fish and Chips in Front Street, said she arrived for work just after the accident had happened, and the child was already in an ambulance.

She added she saw a woman sitting on the pavement crying, but was not sure of her involvement in the matter. "Everyone is very shocked and concerned about it," she said.
